Who hasn't ever left their belongings on the sand for a refreshing dip? Yet this time, that simple gesture was about to hold a rather… disconcerting surprise. Everything seemed ordinary: the sun, the waves, the cries of the seagulls. Until I touched my towel and felt something slimy and unfamiliar. Needless to say, my heart skipped a beat!
A fright unlike any other

Like every summer, I was taking advantage of my vacation at my grandparents' house to head to the beach. That day, after a long swim, I returned to my towel, happy and relaxed. But as I shook it out, I felt a strange, almost alive texture. Panicked, I threw it to the ground without thinking. My imagination ran wild: jellyfish? strange debris? insect?
Once the initial shock had passed, I took a deep breath. Curious nonetheless, I pulled out my phone to capture the object before it disappeared. A quick photo, then off to Grandpa, the expert on all things that live between the sand and the rocks.
Grandfather's verdict

A few minutes later, her message made me burst out laughing (and relieved)! What I had taken for a strange creature was actually just a clump of sea snail eggs . Yes, those discreet little mollusks that you sometimes see clinging to rocks had laid their future babies… on my towel!
These translucent, gelatinous sacs serve as a protective cocoon for the embryos until they hatch. Their somewhat unsettling appearance—somewhere between a pearl and a miniature jellyfish—can be surprising, especially if you don't know what they are. But in reality, they are completely harmless.
When nature plays the artist
Intrigued, I sought to learn more. These eggs are often laid on seaweed or shells, but ocean currents can carry them several meters, even to the shore. Suffice it to say, my towel simply served as a chance stopover!
Their slightly viscous texture protects the embryos from salt and sun, much like a natural cradle. Upon closer observation (without touching them, of course!), I noticed tiny, almost imperceptible shapes inside. A fascinating sight, like a secret of the sea that nature had entrusted to me.
A lesson in respect and wonder

This little adventure reminded me how surprising nature can be when you take the time to look at it differently. What initially seemed strange, even disgusting, turned out to be a true treasure of life.
Since that day, I pay even more attention to what I find on the beach. Before panicking or kicking away something unknown, I first ask myself: what if it's simply a piece of nature on a journey?
So, the next time you come across a mysterious object by the water's edge, breathe, observe, and let yourself be surprised. The sea sometimes has much more to teach us than we think.
